MYTH:
You have the right to "be presumed innocent until proven guilty".
FACT:
The new anti-terrorist legislation would allow the authorities to detain people
for up to 48 hours for questioning, upon suspicion of comitting a 'terrorist
act'. This may simply be a person who ASIO believe may have information that
would help them with their enquires. This could include journalists, lawyers
and politicians.
MYTH:
Under privacy laws you have the right "to freedom of expression, assembly
and association"
FACT:
The Government now reserves the right to read your emails, tape your phone,
break up public gatherings and ban political organisations under new anti-terrorist
legislation.
MYTH:
You have the right "to remain silent until you have legal representation"
FACT:
The Attorney General has stated that people arrested could face up to five years
in jail for refusing to answer questions
